Katie Perkins
Katie Perkins was four when she was diagnosed with cancer. She is now a cancer survivor, but the experience left her with a disability. She received good support while in school, but when school and its social infrastructure ended, it wasn’t easy to stay connected with other people. Fortunately, a friend with whom she bowled told her about The Arc NW. Katie shared, “I learned about all the activities they had to offer.”
Katie started to attend events through the Just Fun Club (JFC) and Athletic Program. She is now a member of JFC and an active athlete. She enjoys the activities because: “I feel more accepted and a part of the community.”
Her dream was also to get a job. When the Lekotek Librarian position came available, Katie applied and got it. “Without The Arc NW, I would be at home all the time. Now, I am more independent and responsible.”
Katie has two sisters, Hanna and Molly, and one niece. She lives at home with her mom and Hanna as well as their dog, Rosa, and cat, Lucy. In addition to working and being a member of The Arc NW, Katie enjoys scrap booking, rug hooking, and creating beautiful greeting cards.
Thank you for being an Arc NW member, Katie!
